When Foreigners Replace Chinese Migrant Workers in China

A video went viral last year in China as it showed factory bosses being interviewed by their prospective employees in Guangzhou. One of the bosses even lamented that he could not find new employees for his factory and may have to close operations if the situation continues that way.

He added that tables have now turned as people have to interview them before agreeing to join their factories as employees.

While that was dismissed as a publicity stunt by netizens, it was soon revealed that most of the newly graduates and youths meant to join the traditional workforce in the country are opting to rather lying flat (tangping) or just freelancing on the internet.

With a fast-aging society and youths who would rather take an easy path to financial freedom, accompanied with technological advancements in the country, blue-colar jobs are facing a lack of employees never seen before in China.

Japan faced the same problem at the height of its economic miracle and still to this day faces the same problem. The solution? Was to ask for Japanese diaspora to repatriate to Japan for some favorable conditions and employment.

In another news:

China 2050

A French freelance photographer, Benoit Cezard, came to China in 2006. He married a local woman and settled in Central China's Hubei province.

In 2013, he made a bold prediction that as China prospers, foreigners will begin to take part in blue-collar jobs like housekeeping, sanitation workers, carters, waiters, peddlers, gardeners, etc.

His work "China 2050" quickly went viral online at the time and incited a huge debate online both in China and abroad.

According to him, you might find some foreign fruit vendors in the streets of China in 2050.

And foreign housekeepers:

Or three-wheeled motorcycle taxis driven by foreigners:

How about sanitation workers?

And construction workers:

Foreign waiters? This might have already been accomplished.

As of the year 2022, foreign nannies are popular in places like Beijing, and foreign waiters in bars and KTVs are increasing in numbers. Looks like Benoit was onto something here.

Let us know your thoughts on this~
